Mark Wilson has today been named the Glen’s Vodka Championship Manager of the Month for March, becoming the first second tier manager since Robbie Neilson in 2014/15 to win four of the prizes in one campaign.
Wilson’s Jags contested four league matches last month and managed to pick up 10 valuable points thanks to a draw with St. Johnstone and wins over Greenock Morton, Raith Rovers and Ross County.
The win over Greenock Morton got things started as the Jags came from behind thanks to a Ben Stanway penalty and a late Alex Samuel strike before they went on to claim a point in a tightly contested clash at home against St. Johnstone the following week.
They were subsequently back on their travels for a midweek trip to Kirkcaldy where Ben McPherson and Aidan Fitzpatrick found the net to secure the club’s first Stark’s Park league win in over 15 years.
The schedule then brought the Maryhill Men home to take on Ross County at The Wyre Stadium at Firhill with a Staggies goal inside two minutes testing the team’s powers of recovery. As has been the case for much of this season, Thistle responded well to the adversity and led 3-1 at half-time – a lead they would hold for the rest of the game.
After being presented with his award, Mark said:
“March was set up to be a really challenging month for us with the teams we were facing, the grounds we had to go to and the awkward schedule but the team faced up to the challenge brilliantly to earn the points that they did.
“With injuries, suspensions and internationals, we had to call upon just about every senior player available and they all contributed to what we were able to do. That’s one of the reasons I’ve enjoyed this season so much; the players are all committed to the collective effort and that’s a big part of why we are where we are.
“Heading into the final few games of this season, I feel real confidence when I think about the group of players and the backroom staff who I’m working with. So much work has gone into this season from lots of different people and we’re determined to give it the ending it deserves.”
