Steven Docherty, Daniel Gray and Josh Miller have become the three latest Partick Thistle Youth Academy players to progress into the first team set-up by signing two-year modern apprenticeship contracts with the club today.
The teenage trio will now get the opportunity to train with the first team squad on a full-time basis starting in pre-season while still being eligible to feature for the Under 19s.
Docherty is a 17-year-old central midfielder who has been with the Academy for over a decade, progressing through the age groups. He featured regularly for the 19s last season, registering seven goals and 11 assists.
Gray, who is 18, joined the Academy last summer and settled in perfectly, scoring 20 goals and creating 12 in his first year as a Jag. Training sporadically with the senior squad throughout the season, Daniel was given his professional debut in November when he came on as a late substitute in a 1-1 draw with Airdrieonians.
Lastly, Josh Miller is the youngest of the three prospects at 17 years old but is another, like Steven Docherty, who has progressed all the way through the Academy since joining in 2016. A standout at Under 17s level, the winger has had a handful of chances to play with the 19s and got his first goal for Gary Irvine’s side in a 6-3 win over Livingston in January.
Thistle Head Coach Mark Wilson said:
“The Academy has such a big part to play here at Partick Thistle and it’s good to see the pathway in action once again as we welcome Steven, Daniel and Josh to the first team set-up officially.
“Last season we had major contributions from multiple Academy graduates and we’ve seen two modern apprentices sign extensions this summer too so hopefully that shows that there are opportunities to be had for our youngsters.”
Academy Director Craig Dargo added:
“The primary goal at the Academy level is to give our players a platform to push on an make it into the Thistle first team so it’s always a pleasure to see the boys stepping up into their modern apprenticeships.
“Steven, Daniel and Josh have all shown lots of promise and hopefully the chance to go and be a part of the professional environment on a daily basis will help them kick on and push towards becoming regulars for Mark in the future.”
