Seven Wealth Player of the Month for March

Mark ChristieMark ChristieFootball1 week ago10 Views

What was another busy month for Mark Wilson’s Partick Thistle side started with a valiant cup exit and ended with 10 points taken from four league games as the gap at the top of the Championship table narrowed to just three points.

The Jags were knocked out of the Scottish Cup by St. Mirren despite a spirited second half fightback but were able to move swiftly on by winning late against Greenock Morton at Cappielow Park.

Three more important league fixtures followed and a hard-fought draw against St. Johnstone was backed up with wins over Raith Rovers at Stark’s Park and Ross County at The Wyre Stadium at Firhill.

There were plenty of impressive performers across the five games but we’ve whittled it down to the four nominees below for you to choose from for the Seven Wealth March Player of the Month!

Lee Ashcroft

The Thistle skipper was the only player in the squad to play every minute of the five games during March and with injuries, suspensions and international duty leading to changes elsewhere in the team, his consistent presence was crucial. Emboldened by Ashcroft’s leadership, the Jags shut out the league’s top scorers St. Johnstone and followed it up with another clean sheet at Kirkcaldy.

Alex Samuel

The January award winner Alex Samuel has now received a nomination for four consecutive months which is hardly a surprise given the goals and energy that he has brought to the team in recent times. His two March strikes both came at important moments for the Maryhill men too with a winner at Cappielow Park securing three points that seemed to be slipping away while his equaliser against Ross County got the side quickly back on terms before the Staggies could settle defensively on their early lead.

Aidan Fitzpatrick

With Logan Chalmers and Tony Watt suffering injuries during March, Aidan Fitzpatrick has stepped up to the plate in a big way. The winger had a hand in six goals this month starting at Cappielow when his pass into the Morton box caused the chaos which ended with the winning strike. Since then, he’s been involved in every goal the Jags have scored including two direct assists and a brilliant late finish of his own at Stark’s Park to seal the points against Raith Rovers.

Ben McPherson

Starting every game during March, this was a month that saw Ben McPherson thriving in an entirely new role. The 22-year-old got a taste of playing further up the pitch when we faced the 10 men of Morton in the second half at Cappielow but he was given that remit from the start against Raith Rovers in Kirkcaldy. Coming off the right-wing, Ben fired home Thistle’s opening goal at Stark’s Park – his first in senior football – and he followed it with another back post tap-in when Ross County visited Maryhill three days later.
