Birnstill Returns to Glasgow as Assistant Coach

The Glasgow Clan is pleased to announce the appointment of former Braehead Clan defenceman Steven Birnstill as assistant coach ahead of the 2026/27 Elite League season.

Birnstill joins the coaching staff alongside returning assistant coach Adam Walker and head coach Mike Sirant, marking a return to Glasgow 13 years after his season with the Braehead Clan during the 2012/13 campaign, where he served as an alternate captain.

The American defenceman arrives in Glasgow following three seasons with Pioneers Vorarlberg in the ICEHL, where he held roles as both assistant coach and head coach since 2023.

Speaking on his appointment, Birnstill said:

I’m very excited to be joining the Clan and returning to Glasgow. I’ve always felt like Glasgow is an ideal spot to play hockey, and to be able to join now as a coach and help the club achieve its goals is a great honor. I’d like to thank the management and Coach Mike Sirant for giving me this opportunity.
I’m very excited to work alongside Mike Sirant this season. He’s a coach with a lot of experience and someone I’m sure I can learn a lot from. I’m very much looking forward to working with him and building something special in Glasgow.

Head Coach Sirant added:

I’m very excited to have Steve join Assistant Coach Adam Walker and myself on the Clan coaching staff. Steve is a very genuine person with solid values, who has a real passion for coaching and the game.
He’ll bring a tremendous amount of energy, enthusiasm, and hockey expertise to the Clan. Steve will be involved in all aspects of the Clan coaching but will play a lead role in working with our defensemen and power play.
I know that Steve is very eager to start working towards a winning season for the Clan!
