The Caledonia Gladiators women continued their perfect start to the Super League Basketball Championship on Saturday, travelling to Cardiff to face Cardiff Met Archers before the international break. A dominant performance saw the Gladiators secure a convincing 106–76 victory, extending their winning record to 6–0.
Ella Doherty opened the scoring with a three-pointer after two minutes of scoreless action. The Gladiators quickly established their presence inside, using their size to dominate the boards and create opportunities from beyond the arc. Three early triples helped Caledonia build a double-digit lead within the opening five minutes. Strong offensive and defensive pressure allowed the visitors to continue extending their advantage, with Head Coach Donnie MacDonald rotating his squad and giving every Gladiator an opportunity on the court. Cardiff finished the quarter strongly, however, cutting the deficit to single digits.
The teams traded baskets early in the second quarter before the Gladiators began to find another gear. Excellent ball movement and defensive pressure created multiple fast-break opportunities, allowing Caledonia to convert in transition and push their advantage beyond 20 points. Despite Cardiff continuing to battle for every possession, the Gladiators remained firmly in control and carried a commanding 19-point lead into halftime.
Cardiff came out of the break determined to fight their way back into the contest, gradually chipping away at the Gladiators’ advantage. Caledonia responded with increased defensive intensity, creating more opportunities in transition and forcing the Archers into a timeout. The hosts continued to threaten, bringing the deficit back to 13 points, but consecutive three-pointers from the Gladiators helped restore their advantage heading into the final quarter.
The Gladiators put the game beyond doubt in the final ten minutes, opening the quarter with a 10–0 run to re-establish their dominance. Relentless defensive pressure continued throughout, with Caledonia picking up full court and refusing to allow the Archers back into the game. A strong finish secured a 30-point road victory, with the Gladiators crossing the 100-point mark to finish 106–76 winners in Cardiff.
Captain Maura Fitzpatrick led the way with an outstanding MVP performance, recording 20 points, 2 assists and 2 steals while shooting an impressive 72% from the field.
The result sees the Gladiators head into the international break sitting top of the Super League Basketball Championship with a perfect 6–0 record. The women will return to home court on 6 December for a top-of-the-table clash against Manchester Basketball.
