Glasgow Clan Strengthens Blue Line with Matt Spencer Signing

The Glasgow Clan is delighted to announce the signing of Canadian defenceman Matt Spencer for the 2026/27 Elite League season.

The 6ft 2 blueliner arrives in Glasgow following two successful seasons with the Nottingham Panthers, returning to the Elite League for a third consecutive campaign.

Across 144 appearances for the Panthers, Spencer registered 10 goals and 40 assists for 50 points, while posting an impressive +48 rating and adding 75 penalty minutes.

During his time in Nottingham, the 29-year-old enjoyed significant team success, helping the Panthers lift the Elite League Playoff title in 2024/25 before adding both the Continental Cup and Challenge Cup to his honours in 2025/26.

Recognised as one of the league’s most dependable two-way defencemen, Spencer combines excellent mobility with high-end hockey intelligence. Comfortable in all situations, he is equally effective breaking up opposition attacks as he is driving play from the back, with the ability to contribute offensively while remaining defensively responsible.

Director of Hockey Operations Zach Vinnell believes Spencer will bring quality and experience to the Clan’s defensive unit.

When Matt became available it was full court press to get him signed. He’s a a high end, “team first” person and player, that you build around if you want to win. He has a great set of tools and you notice when he’s on the ice. Lots to look forward to with Matt in purple for this upcoming season. We are excited to welcome him and his wife to Glasgow!

Spencer expressed his own excitement at joining Glasgow’s roster for the 2026/27 season:
