With Liam McFarlane away on international duty, Lewis Budinauckas made his first league appearance of the season as Thistle secured a comprehensive 3-0 win over Arbroath on Saturday.
Having most recently featured as the penalty shootout hero against Livingston in the Premier Sports Cup in July, Budinauckas produced a steady performance between the sticks for the Jags to earn his 10th clean sheet in 22 appearances at the club and after the match he expressed his joy at having contributed to a victory.
“I’m absolutely delighted for the team. It’s been well documented that recently we’ve struggled in front of goal but we’re happy to put that to bed today and get all three points.”
“It was satisfying a really satisfying result. They became a bit of a bogey team for us last season but today was a great feeling and it gets us going back in the right direction.”
Reflecting on his own display, the 24-year-old was pleased with his return to the starting line-up.
“I thought I played well today without having too much to do – it’s always nice when your first game back is a clean sheet. The rest of the team obviously deserve a lot of credit because they’ve been defending brilliantly all season long and it makes my job easier.
“I’ve been preparing for this game by keeping my head down, training the exact same way as I would if I was playing every week, making sure I’m ready and in the best shape possible if I’m called upon and I think that all helped me coming back into the side today.
“The goalkeeping group is really good here. I’ve got a great relationship with Liam and also the young goalkeepers like Connor too. We all work well together and we’re rooting for each other all the time.”
Finally, Lewis looked ahead to this weekend’s game against Livingston in West Lothian where the Jags will be looking for a repeat of their August home win over the Lions.
“It’s another big one for us because we want to build momentum. We need to keep on it and take today’s positive result onto next week and try to keep the wins coming.”
