Football has a funny way of giving you the chance to put things right. Four days after leaving Inverness wondering how on earth we had come away with just a single point, East Fife produced the perfect response with a magnificent 2-0 victory over Greenock Morton at Bayview.

Saturday’s trip to the Highlands had been one of frustration. The Fifers looked set to claim a superb three points before a stoppage-time equaliser denied Dick Campbell’s side the win their performance deserved. Losing the penalty shootout only added to the disappointment, but if there was any lingering frustration in the East Fife dressing room, it was channelled in exactly the right way on Tuesday evening.

From the first whistle, the Fifers looked like a side determined to make a statement. Every tackle was met with a roar from the Bayview support, every loose ball was contested, and every player in black and gold played with an intensity that Morton simply couldn’t match. This wasn’t a backs-to-the-wall display against higher-league opposition – East Fife took the game to a side looking to challenge towards the top end of the Championship.

The breakthrough arrived after 32 minutes, and it was no more than the home side deserved.Tom Milnefired East Fife in front, sparking celebrations around Bayview, and before Morton had time to gather themselves, the Fifers struck again. Just a minute later,Nathan Austindoubled the advantage, capping a devastating spell that left the visitors shell-shocked and the home support in dreamland. Cammie Ross needs credit for his incredible build-up as East Fife secured the two punch knock out.

Morton naturally saw more of the ball after the interval, but East Fife never looked rattled. The back line stood firm, the midfield worked tirelessly to close down every second ball, and Dick Campbell’s side continued to carry a threat whenever they broke forward. In truth, the Fifers looked the more likely side to score again, such was the confidence flowing through the team.

Perhaps the most pleasing aspect of the victory was just how deserved it felt. There was no smash-and-grab about this one. East Fife were organised, disciplined and brave in possession, matching a full-time side in every department and coming out deserved winners.

If the performance in Inverness proved we can compete with teams from a higher division, Tuesday night’s display proved we can beat them too. Four points from the opening two matches may not tell the full story after what happened in the Highlands, but six points after two games against full-time opposition would have been more than deserved. On this evidence, there is every reason for Fifers to believe this team can make a serious push for the knockout stages.
