Inverness Caledonian Thistle 1-1 East Fife (5-3 penalties) – Match Report by Oli Anderson
🏆Premier Sports Cup Group F MD1
📍Sarens PSG Stadium
🗓️Saturday 11th July 2026 | Kick-off: 3:00pm

East Fife produced an excellent opening-day performance in the Premier Sports Cup, earning a thoroughly deserved point in normal time before Inverness Caledonian Thistle claimed the bonus point with a 5-3 penalty shootout victory at the Sarens PSG Stadium.

The Fifers looked organised and confident from the first whistle, frustrating the hosts with a disciplined defensive display while carrying a real threat on the counter-attack. Their reward arrived after 34 minutes when Myles Gaffney coolly finished to give Dick Campbell’s side a deserved lead. It was no more than East Fife merited after an impressive first-half showing in which they matched their full-time opponents all over the pitch.

Inverness naturally enjoyed more of the ball after the interval as they searched for a route back into the contest, but East Fife refused to buckle. Brian Easton marshalled the defence superbly, Derek Gaston was assured whenever called upon, and every player in black and gold worked tirelessly to preserve the advantage. Although chances were limited at either end, the visitors looked increasingly likely to see out an excellent victory.

Heartbreak came deep into stoppage time when substitute Adam MacKinnon bundled home an equaliser in the 91st minute to rescue the hosts and send the tie to penalties. It was a cruel blow for the Fifers, who had defended magnificently throughout and looked set to claim all three points.

The resulting shootout went Inverness’ way as they converted all five spot kicks to secure the extra bonus point, while East Fife saw one effort kept out in a 5-3 defeat on penalties. Despite the disappointment, there was enormous encouragement to take from the performance. Few would have argued had East Fife returned to Methil with all three points after producing one of their most disciplined and committed displays in recent memory. If the Fifers can reproduce that level over the remainder of the group stage, there is every reason to believe they can challenge for qualification.
