East Fife’s Premier Sports Cup campaign produced another chapter to savour as Dick Campbell’s side dumped Premiership outfit St Johnstone out of the competition after a dramatic penalty shoot-out in Perth. It was an unbeaten campaign for East Fife, which makes it seem all the more cruel that we did not progress into the knockout rounds.

Few outside the black and gold support gave the Fifers much chance before kick-off, but football has never been played on paper. East Fife arrived with belief, organisation and the sort of togetherness that has become a hallmark of a Dick Campbell side. For long spells they frustrated a Saints team that enjoyed plenty of possession but found precious few clear openings.

The visitors defended with discipline, worked tirelessly in midfield and always looked capable of causing problems on the break. Every tackle was cheered by the travelling support as though it was a goal, and the players fed off that energy throughout the afternoon.

When St Johnstone finally looked to have snatched victory with a stoppage-time goal through Sam Stanton, it felt like cruel punishment for East Fife’s efforts. But this team has developed a habit of refusing to accept defeat. Deep into added time, Jack Healy popped up with a priceless equaliser that sparked wild celebrations behind the goal and sent the tie to penalties.

The shoot-out summed up everything about this East Fife side: calm, committed and fearless. While the Premiership side began to feel the pressure, the Fifers kept their composure. A missed St Johnstone penalty proved decisive before U20s graduate Jaiden Fairley confidently converted the winning kick to seal a fantastic 5-4 success from the spot.

Results like this do not happen by accident. Campbell has built a squad that knows its roles, competes for every ball and never believes the game is lost. Knocking out a club from the top flight is another reminder that East Fife are becoming awkward opponents for anyone.

The celebrations at full-time were fully deserved. The travelling fans had witnessed a performance packed with heart, resilience and no shortage of quality. Whatever happens next, this is a cup tie that will live long in the memory; and perhaps one that convinces a few more people never to underestimate the men from Methil.
